What was before:

Zhanna came to us with a decent profile:

  • good academic performance;
  • volunteer experience;
  • head of the English club at the university;
  • prize-winning places at English language Olympiads.

But there were also difficulties:

  • she lacked a strong personal brand;
  • there was no understanding of what activities were needed for a PhD application;
  • achievements were not packaged into a convincing essay;
  • fear of making mistakes in documents and missing a chance.

What we did:

We developed an admissions strategy and a step-by-step plan, the main part of which was the formation of a personal brand and strengthening of Zhanna’s scientific profile.

They added practical experience – Zhanna completed an internship on a drilling rig and became the foreman of her team.

Strengthened the portfolio with achievements – victory (2nd place) in an international competition + internships and certificates in the specialty.

We expanded our volunteer experience – Zhanna taught geology and mineralogy to schoolchildren, which demonstrated her social involvement.

Joined professional communities to strengthen her scientific networking.

She improved her academic performance at the university, which resulted in her receiving an increase in her scholarship.

We put together a strong package of documents – a resume, an essay, letters of recommendation. In the essay, we linked her personal story to the global problem of the environmental consequences of the oil and gas industry.

We prepared an application and completed documents in accordance with all Columbia University standards.

Prepared for exams and interviews – Zhanna successfully passed GRE, IELTS, CPE and confidently passed the interview.

RESULT:

Zhanna got into the PhD in Earth and Environmental Science program at Columbia University on her first try—exactly where she dreamed of!

Zhanna’s story proves that even if your major seems “ordinary,” with systematic work and the right strategy, you can get into one of the strongest universities in the world. The main thing is not to be afraid of ambitious goals and to consistently pursue them.
