Admission to Design/Fine Arts programs at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

with a $72,000 scholarship

Student request

Evdokia wanted to enroll in a bachelor’s program in design — with a focus that would be based on a personal story about how architecture and the urban environment influence a person’s emotional state. The goal was to build strong motivation with a relatively small number of specialized activities.

Profile analysis

By the time she started working, Evdokia had the following activities:

  • Music school — accordion, performances with an orchestra
  • Taekwondo and yoga classes
  • Self‑study of English after moving to Thailand
  • Childcare
  • Volunteer work, including Beach Cleanup
  • Participation in a school business project
  • Household duties
  • Public speaking classes

The activities were diverse, but not directly related to design — the task was not so much to add new items as to find a story in Evdokia’s personal experience that would logically lead to the profession of a designer.

Workflow

Central idea. The story was built around the author’s personal experience of living in St. Petersburg and then moving to Thailand. The contrast between the atmosphere of the historical centre of St. Petersburg and the natural environment of Phuket shaped Evdokia’s interest in biophilic design and psychologically comfortable spaces. The central idea was the desire to combat soulless urbanization and to create public spaces that have a positive impact on people’s mental well‑being.

Personal project. We created the Path to Design project — an author’s Telegram channel about development in the field of interior design.

Professional training. Completed a series of courses on Domestika: Interior Styling, Materials for Interior Design, Freehand Architectural Design, and Color Applied to Interior Design.

Portfolio and documents. We compiled a portfolio, gathered certificates of completed courses, wrote a main essay outlining the idea of design as a tool for improving the quality of life through the combination of architecture, nature, and human psychology, and prepared additional essays, recommendations, and a complete package of documents.

Result

Evdokia enrolled at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design with a scholarship of $72,000, which covers 60% of the tuition fee.
