Yale University is one of the oldest universities in the United States, founded in 1701, and one of eight Ivy League universities. In US News 2026, Yale ranks #4 among national universities—higher than all Ivy League universities except Princeton and Harvard. Yale Law School is the #1 law school in the United States almost every year. The campus is located in New Haven, Connecticut, 90 minutes from New York City. Yale is particularly known for its exceptionally generous financial aid system: starting in 2022, the university introduced need-blind admission for all students, including international students, and in January 2026, it expanded the guarantee—now families with incomes up to $100,000 pay nothing.

About the university

Yale University was founded in 1701 as one of the first higher education institutions in the British colonies in North America. Over the course of more than three centuries, the university has developed an academic tradition that has had a direct impact on American politics, law, science, and culture. Yale has been home to over 60 Nobel laureates, both students and faculty members.

The campus in New Haven has been built over three centuries in the Gothic and Georgian styles. The central part, the Old Campus, is surrounded by historic 19th-century buildings, and it is surrounded by 14 residential colleges, research buildings, and professional schools. Yale covers 1,108 acres, making it one of the largest campuses among the Ivy League universities. It is an hour and a half ride from New York City on the Amtrak train.

The Yale Art Gallery, the oldest university art museum in the United States, is open free of charge to all students. The Yale Peabody Museum is one of the country’s leading natural science museums. Yale’s library system is the largest among Ivy League universities, with over 15 million volumes.

Famous alumni of Yale University include Bill Clinton (42nd President of the United States), Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State), George H. W. Bush (41st President of the United States), George W. Bush (43rd President of the United States), Sonia Sotomayor (Judge of the United States Supreme Court), Meryl Streep (Actress), Anderson Cooper (CNN TV host), Nobel laureate in Economics William Nordhaus (2018).

Arrangement

Кампус

The system of 14 residential colleges is one of the main elements of Yale’s student culture. Each undergraduate student belongs to one of the 14 colleges: These are independent communities with their own dean, library, canteen, sports facilities and centuries-old traditions. Students of different faculties and courses live, dine and spend leisure time together — the system creates horizontal connections that persist throughout their careers. The model is inspired by Oxford and Cambridge. More than 80% of undergraduate students live in university residences.

New Haven is a compact university town with an active cultural scene, restaurants, and theaters. The Yale Art Gallery, Yale Peabody Museum, Yale Philharmonia rehearsals, and School of Drama theater productions are available to all students. There are over 500 student clubs and organizations, and the Yale Political Union is one of the oldest and most respected debate clubs in the United States.

Yale participates in the NCAA Division I as part of the Ivy League conference. The Harvard-Yale Game, an annual football match against a rival school, is one of the oldest in American college sports history.

Admission process

Yale accepts about 4.59% of applicants (class of 2029, 50,227 applications). Applications are accepted through the Common App or the Coalition App.

Selecting a faculty. Плюсик

At the undergraduate level, most students enroll in Yale College, a unified undergraduate college with subsequent specialization. Professional schools (Law, Medicine, Music, Drama) have separate admission processes.

Transcripts. Плюсик

Full school transcript. Yale expects a high GPA and courses from AP, IB, or similar programs.

Essay. Плюсик

Common App Essay + Short Additional Responses Yale: Why Yale, what major are you considering, what makes you unique. Additionally, Yale offers an optional short video response, allowing you to provide a live introduction to yourself.

Letters of recommendation. Плюсик

Two from subject teachers, one from the class teacher. Yale accepts an optional additional letter from a mentor or academic advisor.

Testing. Плюсик

Yale applies a test-flexible policy: SAT/ACT are not required, but if they are not submitted, all AP or IB exam scores must be provided. Mid-50% accepted: SAT 1500–1570, ACT 34–36.

Extracurricular activities. Плюсик

Yale particularly values deep engagement in the arts, music, research, and leadership. For the School of Music, an audio portfolio; for the School of Drama, an audition.

Deadlines. Плюсик

Restrictive Single-Choice Early Action (SCEA) — until November 1 (when applying to Yale through SCEA, you cannot simultaneously apply to other private universities through ED or EA). Regular Decision — until January 2. SCEA provides a statistically significant advantage: a 2-2.5 times higher RD acceptance rate.

Interview. Плюсик

Yale conducts alumni interviews in most regions of the world, which is an important part of the application process and is recommended if possible.

Admission Features

Educational process

For international applicants — transcripts with official translation, TOEFL (100+ iBT) or IELTS (7.0+), essays and letters of recommendation.

Yale’s Key advantage for International Students: Yale — need-blind for all applicants without exception, including foreign citizens — starting in 2022. This means that the financial situation of the family does not affect the decision on enrollment for any applicant in the world.

Yale is part of a very small group of US universities with such policies for international students: Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Amherst, Bowdoin, and Yale.

Scholarships and grants

Yale is among the universities with the most generous financial aid system in the world. Aid is provided exclusively in the form of grants — without educational loans in the standard support package.

In January 2026, Yale significantly expanded the guarantees for students applying from 2026:

  • Families with an income of up to $100,000 (with typical assets) — zero direct expenses: tuition, housing, meals, travel expenses + a $2,000 start-up grant for first-year students.
  • Families with incomes up to $200,000 (with typical assets) receive full tuition coverage.
  • Yale covers 100% of the demonstrated need for all admitted students, without loans.
  • Approximately 56% of students receive need-based financial aid, with an average grant of over $60,000 per year.
  • The average net price for aid recipients is approximately $18,535 per year (US News).
  • Yale is ranked #3 in the Best Value Schools category (US News 2026), which is a paradox: one of the most expensive universities in the country is also one of the most affordable.

The Yale School of Music is a special case, as it offers full tuition coverage for all admitted students, regardless of their financial situation.

For PhD programs at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, funding is typically full, including tuition, scholarships, and insurance.

Prospects after graduation

The median salary for Yale graduates after six years is $81,765 per year (US News). The 6-year graduation rate is 96.3%, one of the highest among all universities reviewed.

The Yale Alumni Association has over 70,000 alumni. The proportion of Yale graduates among current federal judges, senators, secretaries of state, and leaders of international organizations is disproportionately high relative to the size of the university.

Yale Law graduates hold positions as Supreme Court judges (five current judges are Yale Law graduates), attorneys general, and partners in major law firms. Yale SOM graduates work at McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, and major NGOs. New York City is an hour and a half away, making the financial and business opportunities of the metropolis a part of student life.

Scientific achievements

Yale’s annual external research funding exceeds $1.1 billion. Key centers include: Yale Institute for Global Health, Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, Wu Tsai Institute (neuroscience and cognitive science), Yale Center for British Art, and Yale Peabody Museum (one of the world’s leading natural history museums).

Yale is ranked in the top 5 for Biology and top 7 for Psychology (THE Subject Rankings), and consistently ranks 6th in the world for THE Life Sciences. According to the Nature Index, Yale is ranked #5 in the world for healthcare (2025). Yale School of Medicine is particularly strong in immunology, where pioneering discoveries in the mechanisms of T-cell function were made in the 1980s, laying the foundation for modern cancer immunotherapy.

Yale’s library system is the largest in the Ivy League, with over 15 million volumes, including unique manuscripts and archives, available to undergraduate students through the Dean’s Research Fellowship.
