Janel dreamed of studying in the USA in the field of Computer Science, and in the long term, she wanted to work on implementing smart city technologies in urban infrastructure management systems.

She came to us already with an active extracurricular life and continued to develop the projects she had started even before she started working with us. We agreed together that this would become the foundation of her profile, and we added several more activities to it.

By the time she started working, Zhanel already had a rich portfolio of activities:

  • 1st place at the Pace Camp hackathon
  • Participation in a hackathon organized by UN Women Kazakhstan as the youngest team lead
  • 3rd place at the case championship
  • Training as part of the Samsung Innovation Camp program
  • Studying at KIMEP, a university in Kazakhstan
  • 3rd place in the Republican English Olympiad
  • 2nd place in the school English Olympiad
  • 1st place in the city debates
  • 3rd place in the case competition as a team leader
  • Organizing a charity event to help Turkey and Syria

This was a strong and diverse foundation, especially in terms of leadership and teamwork in the IT field. There was no unified story that would tie all of this together into a cohesive personal brand — and that’s exactly what we worked on together for a long time and with great care.

Work process:

Personal brand. We focused on building a unified personal brand around Janel’s interest in technology and urban infrastructure — this was the key factor behind her strong results.

Collected activities. The profile includes: creating our own Technovation Girls team, participating in hackathons and competitions, attending a summer AI incubator at nFactorial, organizing the Almaty IT Community Team, serving as the head of the QAZAQ IT Community youth corps, taking 1st place in the school computer science Olympiad and advancing to the district stage, coordinating the growClub project, organizing a school debate club, volunteering with the UN for children, studying at the Samsung Innovation Campus at KazNU and through the CodeGirlzz program, serving as a school moderator, and running our own project, PARAQUE — a platform for finding events for school students.

Documents. We worked long and hard on the motivation essay for the Common App, prepared 3 recommendation letters so that they would fit perfectly into the overall profile, and wrote additional essays to meet the requirements of the universities.

Result:

Janel received offers from 5 universities in the USA:

  • Oregon State University — $17,000 per year, totaling $56,000
  • DePaul University — $25,000 per year, totaling $100,000
  • The University of Arizona — $4,000 per year, totaling $16,000
  • The University of Utah — $8,000 discount
  • Washington State University — $4,000 per year, totaling $16,000.

The total amount of financial aid offered is $196,000.
