How to Apply to Seoul National University

To apply to SNU as a foreigner, you need to understand several parallel processes: bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate, professional postgraduate, or admission through a government scholarship are different procedures with different requirements and deadlines.

Selecting a level of study and program Плюсик

The first step is to determine the level of study, check the requirements of the specific program, the language of instruction, and the deadlines and format for submitting documents.

International recruitment and application Плюсик

The academic year at SNU begins in the spring, but international admission is available for both semesters, spring and fall. Separate materials for undergraduate and graduate students are published on the university’s website for each admission. The exact dates should be checked for each admission separately.

Preparation of documents Плюсик

The basic package includes an application form, academic documents, graduation certificate, passport information, language test results, a motivation letter or curriculum, and recommendation letters. Some programs may require a portfolio or additional materials.

Language of instruction and examinations Плюсик

The language requirements depend on the program and the level of study. Some programs are taught in English (IELTS or TOEFL is required), while others are taught in Korean (TOPIK is required). The specific requirements should be checked in the admission guide for the chosen program.

Admission Features

The beginning of the school yearThe academic year at SNU begins in the spring, but international admission is open for both the spring and fall semesters, providing applicants with flexibility in their application deadlines.
Student visaAfter receiving an official invitation from the university, the student applies for a D-2 student visa at the Korean embassy or consulate in their place of residence. This is a standard procedure for all levels of education, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs.
Language of instructionAn important detail: at the admission stage, it is worth considering that about 10-20% of courses at SNU are taught in English, with the highest proportion of English-language courses concentrated in the faculties of engineering and business. Other fields may require a higher level of Korean.
Educational process

Admission to SNU differs from the procedures familiar to CIS applicants: international recruitment follows a separate track from the domestic Korean competition, and the assessment is based on a combination of academic documents, language certificates, and a motivation letter or curriculum.

Scholarships and grants

SNU offers several scholarship tracks for international students, depending on their level of study.

For applicants to the bachelor's degree program Плюсик

The Korean Government Scholarship (GKS) may provide full tuition waivers for eight semesters and monthly living allowance. The competition is high, and the conditions must be checked against the requirements of the government agency NIIED and the Study in Korea resource.

After admission Плюсик

The Glo-Harmony Scholarship is available to international students from countries on the Official Development Assistance (DAC) list and may include full tuition waivers and monthly stipends.

For master's and postgraduate studies Плюсик

A separate SNU Global Scholarship program may include tuition fees, living expenses, and flight costs. The specific amounts depend on the program and the selection criteria.

Government Scholarship of Korea (GKS) Плюсик

A separate funding path that is not automatically linked to admission to SNU. You need to check whether the selected program is included in the specific set, what the conditions are for the specific country, and what the deadlines are for submission.

Arrangement

Inside the university

SNU provides student housing through Gwanak Residence Halls, the university’s largest student residence complex, accommodating over 5,970-6,000 students from over 80 countries. The complex is located at the back gate of the campus in the Gwanak area and consists of 27 buildings.

Work visaForeign students on a D-2 visa can work part-time only after obtaining permission from the immigration service. Permission is granted if the average score is at least 2.0 and depends on the level of Korean (TOPIK) - the higher the level, the more hours per week are allowed to work.
DormitoriesThe cost of a dormitory for undergraduate students is approximately 128,500-255,000 won per month, while the cost for graduate and doctoral students is 221,500-312,100 won per month. The exact price depends on the type of room (single or double) and the specific building. It is important to note that accommodation in a dormitory for international students is not guaranteed, and applications are reviewed based on priority and availability, especially for students on semester-based programs. For those who do not receive a dormitory room, studio apartments ("one-room") are available for rent in the Naksonde, Sillim, and Boncheon areas near the campus, with prices ranging from 300,000 to 600,000 won per month, and a deposit of 2,000,000 to 10,000,000 won.

Prospects after graduation

Top Korean employers, such as Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and SK Group, regularly hire SNU graduates directly from campus, reflecting the university’s strong industry connections.

After graduation, international graduates have several visa options to pursue their careers in Korea. The D-10 visa is designed for job search after graduation. From 2026, undergraduate graduates with a TOPIK level of 4 or higher who graduated in the last 3 years can obtain this visa through a simplified procedure.

A separate path is the K-Star visa, which is focused on science and technology professionals and is particularly relevant for graduates of SNU’s engineering and science programs.

Seoul National University is the largest research university in South Korea, ranking first in the country in terms of the number of scientific publications in several key fields: biology (71st place in the world), chemistry (51st), physics (64th), medicine (106th), computer science (85th), and environmental science (88th), according to an analysis of scientific publications and citations.

The university has significant research institutes, including the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, and the Big Data Institute, each of which conducts independent research programs at an international level.

Over 95% of SNU’s faculty members hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in their field.
