Applying for directing courses in the USA

with a $503,000 scholarship

Student request:

Angelina came to us with a challenging background. She had a 4‑year gap year after school and couldn’t provide a transcript for the 10th grade. The girl from Kharkiv moved to study in Belgorod, and getting the document was impossible. She hadn’t taken the SAT and had never had any contact with directing before.

At the same time, the goal was clear: to enroll in the United States specifically in film directing, inspired by the New York school of directing, and to tell stories through film about the psychological problems of teenagers and the formation of their personalities using techniques of avant‑garde cinema.

Profile analysis:

What did Angelina have at the start?:

  • Creative education and acting expertise in SMM and visual
    content
  • Volunteering, including 500+ hours of helping children
  • Creative contests and awards

The base was creative and versatile, but not directly related to directing. Plus, the formal difficulties are the lack of a transcript for one of the school years and a gap year in 4 years, which had to be explained correctly in the application.

Work process:

Strategy and motivation. We identified a strong personal motivation — directing as a tool for discussing mental health and personal development. It was around this topic that we built the entire profile and documents.

The connection between experience and profession. They showed how past experience in content, visuals, and acting logically leads to directing, rather than looking like a random turn.

Training from scratch. Angelina completed the Social Media Marketing Certification from WizeClub, and then focused on specialized courses — including the FilmSkills: Film Directing Master Course, an intensive course on working with actors, shot planning, and the filming process.

Practice in directing. She made her own short film about mental health — from scriptwriting to post‑production, with posts on Instagram and on the website, as well as screenings with discussions. Later, she made another experimental short film in Johnson City.

Industrial experience. I volunteered at the Cobb International Film Festival in Marietta — I registered guests and participants, and assisted the directors and the festival team.

Academic and work-related aspects. In parallel, I worked as a Front of House Associate at Panda Express, participated in the company’s charity campaigns, and trained new employees — this experience also became part of the overall profile.

Documents. We have prepared a complete package of documents, including an explanation of the gap year and the missing transcript — in such a way that this does not appear to be a weak point in the application.

Result:

Angelina received 5 offers from universities in the USA:

  • Whittier College
  • New York Film Academy
  • Pace University
  • Drexel University
  • Mount St. Mary’s University

The total amount of scholarships is $503,000; each university provided funding for tuition. Whittier College offered a scholarship covering 81% of the tuition cost.

If you have a non‑standard background, a gap year, or an incomplete set of documents, this is not a reason to give up on your dream of studying abroad. Come to a free consultation, and we’ll look at your case!
