Reach, target, and safer options
A balanced shortlist includes three categories. Reach combines ambitious options with a below-average admission chance, but where you want to study the most. Target includes realistic options with a good chance with the current profile. Safety combines options with a high admission probability, where the student will be happy to study. The ratio is usually 2-3 / 3-4 / 2-3 universities.
Checking the requirements for each program
For each university on the list, you need to check the following: minimum GPA or high school/college GPA, language requirements, whether you need to take the SAT/ACT, the list of required documents, the availability of scholarships and the conditions for receiving them, the deadline for applying, the cost of tuition, and proof of funds for a visa.
Why you shouldn’t choose based solely on the ranking
The global ranking is not a reliable indicator of a university’s suitability for your goals. A top-10 university may not be as good as a top-80 university in terms of the specific program, research opportunities, or scholarship support. Consider how your university education will help you achieve your career and academic goals.
