Maxim wanted to enroll in a bachelor’s program in biochemistry — with a focus that would demonstrate not just an interest in chemistry as a school subject, but its practical application for solving real‑world environmental and scientific problems.
Maxim wanted to enroll in a bachelor’s program in biochemistry — with a focus that would demonstrate not just an interest in chemistry as a school subject, but its practical application for solving real‑world environmental and scientific problems.
By the time he started working, Maxim already had a wide range of activities under his belt:
There were many activities, but they were diverse — the task was to combine them into a single story of a student with a clear scientific interest, rather than just a list of achievements.
Central idea. We focused the profile around biochemistry, chemistry, sustainability, and environmental science. The key activity was the independent study Environmental Chemistry Research — CO₂ Capture, which demonstrated Maxim’s interest in chemistry as a tool for solving environmental problems.
Academic enhancement. We strengthened our position at the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, where Maxim became a State Qualifier, attended a STEM Study Camp in calculus and physics, and qualified at the local level for the Chemistry Olympiad.
Leadership and community. Developed a role in the Science National Honor Society with a focus on chemistry and sustainability, became a leader in SAT Online Tutoring & Bootcamp, participated in the Math Honor Society and AMC 10.
Additional projects. We strengthened the Architecture Explorers project, which is related to the design of a hurricane relief shelter, and conducted independent research on the classification of minerals and rocks.
The human side of the profile. Through volunteering, teaching assistant experience, and helping at the school, Maxim demonstrated academic discipline combined with genuine engagement in the community.
Maxim was admitted to Macalester College with a scholarship of $349,072, which covers 80% of the total tuition cost!
